The Role

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Engineer to work for one of the leading energy Ports as it continues to support the UKs energy transition and the impact it will play on driving renewable energy.

  • Ensure Operational Excellence: Ensure operational excellence through the safe operation and meticulous maintenance of Port infrastructure, maintaining comprehensive technical records and clear multiyear plans.
  • Develop and add to the Engineering team to become an innovative centre of excellence to support the Port's current operational and future strategic developments.
  • To manage the Port's Engineering team, including overseeing, and managing all aspects of function including development of asset management strategy and procedures in line with the Port's objectives.
  • To oversee the engineering budget and delivery of Engineering strategy, projects, on-going reactive and pro-active maintenance.
  • Reporting to the Project Director, as well as regular liaison with Managers and Senior Managers from the Port's other teams.
  • To ensure the company's cultural objectives and core values are brought to the fore in the way Engineering collaborates, operates, and delivers excellence.


PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Line management responsibility for operational health, safety and environmental performance based on implementation of the Ports Integrated Management System and with support from the relevant Port team.
  • Communicate effectively with engineering team members to act as a role model, gain trust, lead, develop, motivate, empower, set goals, and direct their activities.
  • Manage engineering team resource levels and build business cases for any necessary recruitment in the team.
  • Ensure that all works carried out on behalf of the Port fully comply with Construction (Design and Management Regulations) and other appropriate legislation.
  • Participate in the Strategic Growth Campaigns, Leadership Groups and with the Senior Management Team contributing to the effective formulation and delivery of strategic, corporate, and operational plans.
  • Act as communication link between senior management and engineering team as appropriate.
  • Develop and obtain agreement to an Asset Management strategy that ensures the short, medium, and long-term plans are set, developed in line with need and met.
  • Develop, maintain, and implement appropriate Asset Management procedures ensuring that the Ports infrastructure assets are protected, maintained in a fit for purpose condition and all statutory obligations are met.
  • Ensure procedures are integrated into the Port's PIMS system (Port Integrated Management System).
  • Provide advice and guidance to the Operations Director, Harbour Master, Business Development Director and other SMT members, when appropriate on all engineering matters to support informed decision making.
  • Foster engineering's "best practices" for the delivery and maintenance of high-quality infrastructure.
  • Ensure all engineering activities are managed in line with the Ports processes and procedures, with an emphasis on Health and Safety and following Project Management procedures including controlling budgets and financial reporting to ensure that projects are delivered on time and to budget.
  • Oversee, co-ordinate and manage multiple maintenance and capital project delivery and annual budgets to meet agreed limits.
  • Monitor and manage contracts and framework agreements to ensure that deliverables are met to drive best performance and value.
  • Develop & maintain relationships with the Port's stakeholders, customers, and service suppliers (current or potential), with a view to developing the Port's profile.


The Candidate

PERSON SPECIFICATION
  • Degree in an engineering discipline.
  • Commercially astute.
  • Good understanding of Health and Safety legislation, inc. SMSTS training etc.
  • Proven project management experience.
  • Be a competent user of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.
  • Be able to analyse complex problems and critically evaluate solutions, explaining technical solutions by tailoring the information to the level of the recipient.
  • Strong decision-making skills with self-awareness of limitations and knowing when to refer / delegate.
  • Good communication skills at all levels.
  • Be able to categorise, prioritise and plan effectively, working to budgetary constraints.
  • Have a comprehensive understanding of best practice and current standards within engineering and construction.
  • Significant experience managing multiple complex projects, with budgets of more than £1m.
  • Knowledge and or experience of using AutoCAD and or GIS packages.
  • Experience working in Construction and Infrastructure related projects.
  • Experience managing Engineering Teams.
  • A mindset of continuous improvement.


Desirable:
  • Chartered Engineer status
  • Knowledge of process improvement methodologies such as 6 sigma
