The opportunity
My client are a leading specialist project management business serving the power transmission, renewable energy, and power substation sectors.
They are seeking a dynamic Civil Project Engineer to join our team in the Birmingham area.
In this role, you will be responsible for managing substation civil engineering, construction, and contracting activities, from tendering with Sales through to handover to the service department or client.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical:
Oversee civil and structural design, review and comment on civil documentation to ensure it meets project specifications.
Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of UK building regulations, standards, and market practices.
Resolve technical queries from civil designers and manage any site-based remedial works.
Support CDM and Temporary Works Coordinators in fulfilling their responsibilities.
Provide technical input during feasibility, design, construction, and commissioning phases, working closely with contractors and the internal team.
Project Management:
Monitor, control, and report on project progress, ensuring budgets and costs are maintained.
Select and manage key personnel and subcontractors to ensure project success.
Develop cost-effective design and construction strategies.
Assist in the creation and application of design guidance, standards, and specifications for clients.
Experience Required:
Extensive experience in civil engineering, including developing project requirements, cost estimates, and managing large construction projects.
Expertise in civil and structural design, with the ability to review and ensure documentation meets project specifications.
Strong skills in contract negotiations, dispute resolution, and progress reporting.
Familiarity with UK building standards and major utilities like National Grid, SSE, and EDF.
Experience as a Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE) under National Grid's NG/ET/SR188 procedure is a plus.
Chartered Engineer status (IET) or working towards it is desirable.
Education and Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
Membership of a recognized professional institution is required.
