Climate17 is working with an exciting renewables development and management company headquartered in Hertfordshire. We are a dynamic firm that primarily works with solar farms and battery-based energy storage systems but with growth plans that will allow us to move into other technologies and sectors.

We are seeking a Senior Grid Connection Engineer to support their growing team. The ideal candidate will be proactive and positive, with excellent organisational and communication skills and the ability to use their initiative.

Responsibilities of the role include:

  • Lead grid connection applications and progress the current portfolio of projects, as well as lead the development of new project applications.
  • Report to Network Infrastructure Lead and ensure independent workload management.
  • Understand complex grid-related issues and, where possible, recommend solutions during the application process, working with the networks.
  • Devise, create and maintain a suitable storage area for relevant data, pertaining to Grid analysis, connection assessments and capacity analysis.
  • Establish, maintain and lead relationships with the relevant persons in all DNOs, DSOs, the ESO and the TOs.
  • Have an in-depth understanding of the RIIO Business Plan Components, their impact on the development of renewables portfolios and the opportunity they may present.
  • Be able to interpret network publications such as the Future Energy Scenarios, Distribution Future Energy Scenarios, Holistic Network Design, NOA, ETYS and the Long-Term Development Statements.
  • Lead continual research into the DIgSILENT and IPSA suite of software to explore ways that its functionality can increase the capability of the company.
  • Must attend or be a part of working groups relative to the role, including OFGEM led working groups, developer conferences and participate in ENA forums.
  • Understanding of the UK grid code, and the underlying root causes of triggering reinforcement of curtailment of schemes. The candidate must also monitor and ensure understanding of relevant code or policy changes that may impact business operations.
  • Condense and present complex information to a wide range of audiences and ensure all learning's from role- and grid-related activities are relayed to the wider company via appropriate means.

Required Experience:

  • Have 5+ years of business experience in Grid Analysis and Modelling.
  • Solar and battery projects knowledge.
  • Previous experience pertaining to connection studies.
  • Competency with exploring and understanding UK Grid Infrastructure at both Distribution and Transmission level.
  • Knowledge of PowerFactory and IPSA and their uses in expanding the automation and capability of processing DNO/TO Datasets.
  • An eagerness to learn more about the issues the UK Grid faces, and the forward thinking required to find the solutions that will sustain Grid Development.
  • Ability to interpret and critique formal grid connection offers.
  • Ability to challenge the DNO and TO grid offers and proposals.
  • A good understanding of the bottlenecks within the existing grid networks, the mitigations and costs, and timelines to resolve those bottlenecks.
  • Must be able to prioritise workload, tasks and ensure effective risk management.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to summarise complex problems and present them succinctly.
  • Ability to work full-time in the UK and be present in our offices in Hertfordshire.
  • Genuinely keen to develop a career within Grid Analysis and Renewable Energy.
  • Able to propose novel solutions to Grid related connection issues.
  • Have an awareness and understanding of DNO connection processes as well as Transmission Level Connection Processes.

Desirable Candidate Characteristics:

  • Experience at a DNO, Transmission Owner or System Operator.
  • Knowledge of solar farms/energy storage systems, how they work and the factors which contribute to finding and running a good site.
  • Existing relations with Primary System Designers and Planners at each DNO/TO.
  • Competency in other scripting/programming languages and modelling functions of Excel Competency in complementary design software such as CAD, PVCase, PVSyst, etc.
  • Coding or Scripting Experience in PowerFactory or IPSA (PyIPSA etc)
