EPFL's School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering (ENAC) is inviting applications for the new Schindler Chair in the field of Sustainable Buildings and Regenerative Environments. The appointment will be at the Tenure Track Assistant Professor level.
Reducing the environmental footprint of the built environment requires the life-cycle assessment of buildings and infrastructure including the analysis of existing solutions and the prospective analysis of future construction methods. We envisage that this chair contributes both to the development of rigorous analysis methods as well as to national and global decarbonisation scenarios. This endeavour necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the economic and environmental impacts of buildings and infrastructure, including their construction and demolition or reuse, their structural systems and the material and energy flows throughout their life cycle. To transform this understanding into actionable steps, it is anticipated that the chair will collaborate with and provide guidance to policymakers and industry leaders.
The successful candidate, with an engineering or architecture background, holds a PhD degree in a relevant domain and has a clear and strategic vision for research. We are searching for applicants committed to informing policy and industry practice based on impactful science, and to collaborating for solving global challenges worldwide. The successful candidate is expected to develop an independent and competitive research program in a multidisciplinary environment, will supervise PhD students and engage with researchers in related fields across the EPFL campus, particularly with the three Institutes in ENAC and the Center of Worldwide Sustainable Construction (CWSC).
The candidate must have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and contribute to EPFL's education programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels in sustainable design strategies and emerging building practices, in life-cycle sustainability assessment of buildings, and in multi-dimensional analysis of built environment systems.
The new professor will be based in the EPFL Fribourg Associated Campus with unique experimentation and prototyping facilities, while teaching activities will primarily take place in Lausanne. The EPFL environment is multilingual and multicultural. EPFL offers internationally competitive salaries, generous research support and significant start-up resources.
The application package should include the following documents in pdf format: cover letter including a statement of motivation; curriculum vitae; publication list; concise statements of research and teaching interests (up to 5 pages each); as well as the names and contact of three to five references who are ready to supply a letter upon request.
Applications should be uploaded to the EPFL recruitment page:

Application deadline: 15 November 2024.
Further enquiries should be made to:
