    The Iowa Department of Transportation is looking to add an ambitious and motivated engineer specialist to our Bridge Preliminary Design team! In this role you will develop complex preliminary bridge and culvert plans with a mindset focused on our five core values: Safety First, People Matter, Customer Focused, Servant Leadership, and Integrity Without Exception.
     
    This position allows for a flexible schedule Monday through Friday, with a requirement to report to the Central Complex for the first 6 months, located in Ames, Iowa. Travel for inspection, conference, and workshops may be required.
     
    The best candidate for this position will have a passion for bridge design, interested in using it to analyze different challenges and identify successful solutions.     As the Bridge Engineer Specialist (Transportation Engineer Specialist), you will:

    • Developing preliminary bridge and culvert plans in the preliminary section of the Bridges and Structures Bureau as a licensed professional engineer. This includes performing hydrologic and hydraulic design and analysis of various types of complex and/or unique highway structures including both bridges and culverts.
    • Project manager/coordinator for large and/or complex projects that requires developing and communicating design methodologies and standards to consultants or other offices within the DOT for preliminary bridge design.
    • Providing technical engineering assistance as needed to Transportation engineers and design technicians in the preliminary design of plans for all types of highway structures from simple to complex.
    • Making inspections and write reports containing recommendations and estimates on structures that must be repaired or reconstructed to maintain serviceability of the highway system.
    • Developing and implement improvements to Preliminary Bridge Design policy and procedures.
    • Providing expertise to field personnel, the Offices of Construction and Maintenance and the Districts regarding complex construction and maintenance issues involving hydraulics and drainage structures.
    Special Requirements: 
    This position requires candidates to possess an Iowa Engineering License. You will be responsible for maintaining a professional engineer license by meeting continuing education requirements and all other professional obligations required by the State of Iowa.

    Minimum Qualification Requirements

    Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

    1) All of the following (a and b):
    a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and
    b. Two years of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering.
    2) All of the following (a, b, and c):
    a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and
    b. One year of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering; and
    c. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, structural, or transportation engineering; engineering management; or a field closely related to transportation engineering.
    3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work as a Transportation Engineer.

    Additional Qualification Requirements

    Prior to appointment, applicants must possess active licensure as a professional engineer by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board.
