The College of Design & Engineering Studies (CoDES) at Wesleyan University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Design and Engineering Studies with a focus on applied science. The position begins July 1, 2025. We are searching for candidates with equal enthusiasm for innovative approaches to engineering education and for developing an independent, high-level research program with a focus on problems that can be worked on by undergraduate students.
The successful candidate will contribute to the growth of a newly established College of Design & Engineering Studies. We are open to engineers from a range of fields and we place a priority on candidates with a background in mechanical, civil, chemical, or electrical engineering. Candidates should consider how their research could create synergy with the Integrated Design, Engineering, Arts & Society (IDEAS) major hosted by the college, as well as other programs on campus. The successful applicant will possess a strong ability to work with individuals and student teams in project-based courses and an ability to effectively teach students with varying skill sets, as students in introductory courses come from a broad range of academic interests, backgrounds, and strengths.
Wesleyan is a highly selective liberal arts institution that values both scholarship and teaching, has a strong, diverse undergraduate student body, and offers competitive salaries and benefits. The position offers a unique opportunity to thrive at a leading liberal arts university, providing significant institutional support in the form of start-up funds, a three course per year teaching load, and dedicated laboratory space for faculty research. The IDEAS Lab makerspace features a growing array of rapid prototyping and digital manufacturing tools that are incorporated in project development, available both for teaching and research work. In addition, substantial machine shop, analytical instrumentation, and computational resources are available. Collegial faculty interactions include career mentoring, participation in pedagogical innovation, and a shared commitment to the promotion of inclusion and diversity.
A PhD degree in engineering or a related field and teaching experience, which may include teaching as a graduate student or teaching assistant (TA). A successful candidate may be hired as an Instructor if the candidate does not have a Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment, but will complete the Ph.D. within one year of hire.
A complete application includes a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a teaching statement, and an outline of plans for your research program. In the cover letter, applicants should describe how they will embrace the university's commitment to fostering an inclusive community, as well as their experience working with individuals from historically marginalized or underserved groups. You will also be asked to provide the email addresses of three referees from whom we will request confidential letters of recommendation after your application is fully submitted. Applications should be submitted online through the above URL. Review of applications will begin December 13, 2024 and will continue until the position is filled. Please contact Serena Plage (splage@wesleyan.edu) if you have questions about the application process.
