The College of Engineering & Applied Science invites applications for a Scientist I position working in the Institute for Physical Infrastructure and Transportation (IPIT ). The Institute for Physical Infrastructure and Transportation (IPIT ) (https://uwm.edu/ipit/) is an umbrella organization at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee that fosters multidisciplinary research activities. IPIT was founded in 2017 to address the challenges faced by our state and nation. We aspire to be a national leader in improving physical infrastructure to support and enhance the mobility of people and goods, economic development, public safety, and health. Our mission is to offer solutions through research, innovation, collaboration, education, workforce development, and technology transfer.
Job Summary
Conducts and collaborates on transportation engineering research in the field of Civil Engineering and contributes to advancing innovations in traffic safety and operations. Identifies and addresses research challenges, designs and implements innovative research methodologies and prepares findings for presentations to sponsoring agencies and for scholarly publications.
• Identify research questions and develop robust methodologies and procedures to address them.
• Lead or collaborate in the preparation of grant applications and proposals to secure funding for research projects.
• Collect, analyze, and interpret research data (e.g., safety data, traffic data, vehicle data), conduct studies and interviews, and meticulously document results, operating under general supervision with significant autonomy.
• Conduct comprehensive literature reviews, prepare detailed reports, and disseminate findings to relevant stakeholders.
• Participate in and facilitate scholarly events, presentations, and professional development activities to further research dissemination.
• Serve as the point of contact and liaison with external stakeholders, representing the specialized research area, particularly in pedestrian and bicycle counting and safety
Minimum Qualifications
• Ph.D. degree in Transportation Engineering, System Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline
• Statistical modeling skills
• One or more skills in AI & ML, Neural Networks, Computer Vision & NLP
Preferred Qualifications
• Demonstrated experience in applying traditional and new data sources to develop novel mobility applications
• Proficiency in integrating and analyzing data from various sources, including sensor data and crowdsourcing, to enhance transportation infrastructure planning and safety
• Programming experience with web development (frontend, backend, database management, APIs), python programming experience in big data processing, database design, operations and management (e.g., SQL /MySQL), and data visualization
• Experience in independent grant writing
• Experience in project management
