SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory's Facilities and Operations (F&O) Division manages one of the world's premier science facilities for the United States Department of Energy. We occupy a 400 acre site, with 150+ structures, on land owned by Stanford University. We are a service organization committed to the support and success of the Laboratory's Scientific Mission by providing safe and responsive engineering, construction, operations and maintenance of equipment, buildings and infrastructure.

We are seeking a Senior Facilities Civil Engineer to join our Civil Engineering team. In this position, you will provide civil engineering design, planning and review related to SLAC's facilities civil infrastructure systems and serve as program manager for these systems. SLAC's campus utilities include about 12 miles of domestic water lines, 8 miles of sanitary sewer with 16 lift stations, 17 miles of storm drain with 8 lift stations, 10 miles of cooling water, 8 miles of compressed air, 2 miles of natural gas and 5 miles of irrigation water. Examples of projects include system assessments and documentation and design of repairs or replacement for sanitary sewer, storm drain and domestic water systems. Tasks may include evaluation of overall system performance and operation, making recommendations for maintenance and repair of systems, as well as review and comment on consultant produced civil drawing and specification packages as a subject matter expert on large projects.

This position is an employee of Stanford University, providing support to the Department of Energy (DOE) contract at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. This position reports to the Facilities and Operations Chief Civil Engineer.

Your specific responsibilities include:

  • Serve as the technical expert in the performance of civil utilities, with responsibilities involving the planning, design, construction, and modification of campus facilities. 
  • Prepare, review, and analyze projects' technical plans and specifications for sound design, conformance with design guidelines and other related criteria, and pertinent codes or standards.
  • Evaluate and document conditions of existing civil utilities. 
  • Conduct risk assessments and develop contingency plans. Interface and coordinate with/across specialties and disciplines.
  • Serve on major, ongoing, technically complex projects requiring substantial coordination and interface with senior management.
  • Serve as a technical lead on projects in area(s) of expertise across multiple disciplines, and/or contractor activities, through all project phases.
  • Other duties may also be assigned

To be successful in this position you will bring: 

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering and ten years of directly related civil utility engineering and operation experience. 
  • Proficiency with standard desktop applications for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations. 
  • Knowledge of scheduling, project management tools and resources. Deep technical knowledge in area of expertise.
  • Ability to identify and mitigate potential project risk components.

In addition, preferred requirements include: 

  • Certifications issued by the California State Water Resources Control board in water distribution and/or wastewater collection. 
  • Competency using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
