Structural Engineer
Role Overview
The Structural Engineer will provide expert support throughout all stages of the development process, from initial feasibility assessments to the delivery of full design packages. This role involves evaluating value engineering opportunities, challenging building designs, and assessing consultant proposals to ensure cost-effective, compliant, and practical solutions.
Working closely with the Manufacturing Technical Director and the Preconstruction team, the Structural Engineer will drive standardization, offer efficiency solutions, and provide technical guidance on timber frame construction for both production and site installation.
Primary Responsibilities
Pre-Construction
* Assess and validate structural designs, including line and wind loading, to develop best-practice and efficient timber frame solutions.
* Provide engineering solutions for non-standard formats.
* Collaborate with the Group Building Engineer to ensure design queries (RFIs) are resolved promptly and align with the Manufacturing design program.
* Challenge inefficient designs to enhance performance and cost-effectiveness.
Design
* Work closely with the in-house timber frame design team, providing engineering expertise and alternative solutions.
* Ensure all engineering functions and modifications receive full approval from the NHBC Timber Frame Certifier.
* Collaborate with the Technical Director on continuous improvement initiatives and Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA).
* Maintain and manage standard details and factory specifications.
* Review production drawings to ensure compliance with ISO 9001 procedures and design codes.
* Take ownership and accountability for timber frame superstructure design, including roofs, joists, and stairs.
* Provide temporary works design and validation to support site teams with safe erection and working practices.
* Assist factory production and site teams with technical and design-related queries.
* Review contractor and external engineering designs to align with business expectations and efficiency standards.
* Validate timber frame design sequences and risk assessments in accordance with CDM regulations.
Experience, Qualifications & Technical Requirements
* Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Chartered Structural Engineer (MIStructE).
* Experience working in an STA Assure Gold-accredited design office with project management responsibilities.
* Proficiency in IT systems, including AutoCAD (Revit experience is advantageous).
* Strong understanding of technical and regulatory requirements.
* Ability to interpret geotechnical and environmental reports and make suitable recommendations.
* In-depth knowledge of ground condition assessments for foundation and substructure design.
* Expertise in remediation techniques and methodologies.
* Ability to work under tight deadlines and prioritize tasks effectively.
