The Town of Cary is recruiting for a highly motivated, collaborative and adaptive Project Manager to join our OneCary team and share in our goal of creating the Local Government That Doesn't Exist. The Project Manager will be responsible for reviewing transportation and traffic engineering related items for compliance with Town of Cary codes, ordinances, and standard specifications related to site development as part of a land development review team.  Some typical tasks include:

Reviews site and subdivision plans and permits for compliance with the LDO and other regulations and guidelines pertaining to streets, bicycle facilities, sidewalks, transit facilities, etc. with a focus on transportation engineering and traffic engineering; provides pertinent information in staff reports for site and subdivision plans to be considered by the Town Council and P&Z Board;

Performs engineering analysis and studies of technical issues related to land development projects;

Provides technical information, code interpretations and answers complex questions from architects, developers, contractors, and the general public relating to engineering projects, and serves as the point of contact in this process;

Provides professional guidance to potential developers and owners at weekly Development Review Committee meetings to ensure compliance with LDO, Cary Community Plan, Standard Details and Specifications, and other Town plans;

Reviews rezoning cases for compliance with the LDO, Comprehensive Transportation Plan, and other regulations and guidelines; provides feedback at Town Council and Planning & Zoning meetings;

Administers traffic analysis report program associated with rezoning cases, including contract management of on-call traffic engineering consultants;

Reviews traffic management plans associated with land development projects or events;

Reviews payment-in-lieu estimates prepared for land development projects to ensure that the estimates accurately reflect the actual cost of infrastructure construction;

Coordinates on a bi-weekly basis with NCDOT District Engineer's Office to exchange information about development projects;

Coordinates with other departments and Field Services on constructability issues in the field, field adjustments and compliance with approved development.

Job Bulletin

Requires graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field. Also requires a minimum of three years progressive experience in planning, analysis, design or construction of public infrastructure.  

Preference will be given to candidates that have the following:

  • Experience in design or project management of traffic and/or transportation engineering projects
  • Development review experience with traffic and/or transportation projects
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, presentation and customer relations skills
  • Ability to build and cultivate strong collaborative relationships with internal and external partners
  • Ability to learn and adapt in an agile environment
  • Desire to seek out, foster and implement change
  • Engineer Intern Certificate (EIC) or Professional Engineering (PE) License from the state of North Carolina or the ability to obtain within six months.

Requires a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.  Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.
