District 2 Office, Mason City, Iowa (approximately first 2 years)
Iowa 9 Mississippi River Bridge Project, Lansing / Decorah Area (approximately 3-4 years)
Project Management Bureau, Ames, Iowa (after completion of Iowa 9 Mississippi River Bridge)

Present to beginning of Iowa 9 Mississippi River Bridge construction activities (upon hire and for approximately two years you will be reporting to this location). Reporting Location: District 2 Mason City, Iowa. Reporting to District 2 Construction Engineer, in conjunction with the District 2 Assistant District Engineer.
This position will focus on all aspects of project development of the Iowa 9 Mississippi River Bridge in Lansing. Duties include but are not limited to coordinating DOT central office and consultant design efforts, leading Project Advisory Team meetings, coordinating project schedules, meeting with stakeholders, and identifying and resolving project development issues that arise. The objective is to gain an innate understanding of the Iowa 9 bridge design and bring that knowledge to the construction of the project so that it is accomplished in the most efficient and effective manner. This position will also work with the District 2 Construction Residencies to gain knowledge of Iowa DOT construction inspection/administration procedures.
From the beginning of the Iowa 9 Mississippi River Bridge construction activities to completion of the project (for approximately 3 to 4 years). Reporting location: Iowa 9 project site in Lansing/ Decorah Maintenance garage. Reporting to District 2 Construction Engineer
This position will serve as the Project Manager, with support from Resident Construction Engineer staff and Consultant Engineers and staff, for all construction, engineering, and contract administration on the Iowa 9 Mississippi River Bridge project. Evaluate contract compliance, contractor work quality, traffic control, inspection staffing levels, work progress, documentation, utility activities, survey activities, site conditions, constructability problems, differing site conditions, and environmental impacts of construction. Responsible for reviewing contract modifications, resolving contract time disputes and assessing liquidated damages, and resolving contract compliance issues. Effectively communicate and coordinate with stakeholders including media, local officials, civic groups, department staff, state officials, public and private utilities, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), DOT staff from bordering states, regulatory agencies (examples include Army Corp of Engineers, Coast Guard, Department of Natural Resources), railroads, consultants, contractors, sub-contractors, and suppliers.
Direct the activities necessary to evaluate constructability of the design, working day totals, traffic management, and to assure Specifications and Materials Instructional Memorandum requirements are met. The position is a liaison between the District Construction Engineer and the Office of Construction and Materials Bureau in Ames.
Provide technical consultation services to internal and external customers such as: District Construction Engineer, District Engineer, Consultant Engineers and staff, Construction Technician Supervisor and their staff, District Design Engineers and their staff, County and City Engineers and their staffs, materials technicians, contractors, and materials producers.
Be on site and conduct regular project site visits to evaluate contract compliance, contractor work quality, traffic control, inspection staffing levels, work progress, documentation, haul roads, utility activities, constructability problems, differing site conditions, and environmental impact of construction. Establish and maintain effective working relationship with the District Engineer' s Management Team, so programs are accomplished in accordance with Federal and State requirements, departmental policies that meet Specifications and Materials Instructional Memorandum requirements and procedures and the needs of the public.
After completion of the Iowa 9 Mississippi River Bridge, you will be reporting to the Project Management Bureau located in Ames, Iowa.
This position will be a part of a team of project managers in the Project Management Bureau. Assignments will include project management duties for a variety of large projects across the state. The incumbent will likely focus on construction scheduling and management processes that can be performed prior to letting to avoid delays and issues during construction.
- Possess a Class C driver’s license.
- Prior to appointment, applicants must possess active licensure as a professional engineer by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board

- Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
1) All of the following (a and b):
a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and
b. Four years of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering.
2) All of the following (a, b, and c):
a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and
b. Three years of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering; and
c. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, structural, or transportation engineering; engineering management; or a field closely related to transportation engineering.
3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes 18 months of full-time work as a Transportation Engineer Specialist or Transportation Engineer Manager.
