This position is an opportunity to develop critically-needed research and teaching programs in precision agriculture—specifically sensors, automation systems, robotics, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), and management of big data in agriculture. This position is important to the agricultural machinery industry; research is needed to develop sensors, robots, and machinery to assist in all agricultural operations, from tillage to harvesting. Crop producers and farm managers need improved methods to derive actionable intelligence from big data gathered from multiple sources. Application of data science to agriculture is key to producing actionable intelligence. This position is important to the precise delivery of crop inputs; research is needed on monitoring and variable rate application technologies for managing soil and crop health.
The individual will develop a well-recognized and grant-supported research program in precision agriculture, addressing the research needs of the state and region; develop and teach precision agriculture courses needed in a new major and minor in precision agriculture, as well as in the existing major in agriculture systems management; establish collaborative partnerships with researchers in other NDSU units, industries and other institutions; advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students; publish research findings; serve on departmental, college, and university committees; and serve the profession.
The department has strong relationships with local companies, such as John Deere, Case New Holland, Microsoft, machinery dealerships, UAS companies, agronomy companies, as well as many other local companies
Minimum qualifications:
•Ph.D. in precision agriculture, agricultural systems management, or agricultural engineering, or a Ph.D. in a related scientific or engineering field (degree must be completed before assuming the position)
•Interest and ability to develop a nationally-recognized, externally-funded research program and a high quality teaching program in the broad areas of precision agriculture, with emphasis in one or more areas such as UAS, agricultural robotics, or management of big spatial data in agriculture
•Interest in and ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students
•Ability to work independently and as a multidisciplinary team member
•Ability to communicate effectively including excellent oral and written communication skills
Preferred qualifications: •Demonstrated experience in educational programming, especially at a university
•Operational knowledge and understanding of advanced farming systems, including precision agriculture machinery and UAS
•Understanding of Northern Plains agriculture
•Understanding of agronomy, soil science and crop protection
•Experience in preparing successful competitive research proposals
•Leadership, including experience in managing teams and supervising technical support staff
