Engineering and design oversight of new rolling stock equipment procurement and overhaul programs.
Performs the engineering and design oversight for rolling stock equipment programs. This includes attending design reviews, technical working sessions, qualification testing, and First Article Inspections. Participates in technical specification development, proposal evaluation, and award recommendations.
Technical evaluation of contractor/consultant design submittals, including but not limited to, mechanical drawings and reports.
Inspection of Rail Equipment manufacturing process at Contractor’s site or facilities.
Qualification Testing and First Article Inspection of various mechanical & electrical systems for rolling stock.
Preparation of technical specifications for new equipment, and the overhaul of existing equipment utilizing the latest methods, procedures, and technology.
Interface with Maintenance of Equipment departments, Capital Planning departments, and other departments or railroads as necessary.
Provides technical support and direction to the operation of test trains for equipment acceptance after delivery.
Assist senior staff on rolling stock projects.
Competent understanding of engineering principles and their application.
Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Familiarity with state, federal, and industry codes as they relate to rolling stock.
Ability to interact with City, State, and Federal agencies.
Ability to present technical material to a group of public officials or community groups in laymen’s terms.
Familiarity with transportation operations.
Working Knowledge of MS Office Suite (i.e. Word and Excel) or comparable PC applications.
Strong written and verbal skills.
Personal abilities of motivation, self-starter and persistence while motivating others.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to foster teamwork.
Must possess valid driver’s license.
Must be willing to travel.
Must be available 24 hours/7 days a week as required.
Familiarity with Metro-North Railroad’s rolling stock equipment, operations, safety systems, and corporate policies.
Strong knowledge of Mechanical Engineering principles including structural, HVAC, and fluid principles.
Thorough knowledge of locomotive and railcar systems and theory of operations.
Familiarity with mechanical testing equipment.
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution.
Minimum of five (5) years of experience in passenger railcar/locomotive design and/or maintenance environment (or a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution with three (3) years of same).
Minimum of three (3) years of experience managing staff, programs, and/or processes, or completion of Metro-North Railroad Associate Engineer Program.
This is a safety sensitive position and subject to toxicology testing.

Effective September 2017, all full-time non-agreement personnel other than those directly involved with the movement of trains or delivery of service, or assigned to other emergency response teams, are required to serve in the Station Terminal Auxiliary Response (STAR) program requiring Terminal coverage for Grand Central Terminal (GCT) from 4:30 PM-7:30 PM one week per year or responding to Station STAR duty during a service disruption, system-wide at various hours including nights and weekends. This program is designed to improve Metro-North’s ability to provide customer service during emergencies that impact service delivery or other service disruptions that require staff to provide directions and information to MNR customers at GCT or outlying stations. Please note, hours worked during your participation week are subject to change.
Due to the competitive nature of the selection process, not all qualified candidates who meet the minimum requirements for the position are guaranteed an interview. Additional Criteria for Current Employees: Current Metro-North employees must be in active service to be eligible for consideration. Agreement Employees applying for a position outside of their present craft are required to have worked in your current union for at least one (1) year preceding the Application Deadline to be eligible to apply for a posted position, and have completed the agreed upon formal training commitment, including on-the-job training or lock-in requirement, if applicable (for example: Signal Trainee, Foreman-In-Training, etc.). If you are transferring to another craft, you may be required to forfeit your seniority in your present union. Non-agreement employees must have worked in your current position for a minimum of one (1) year preceding the Application Deadline. Along with a background investigation (including but not limited to, employment, education, and criminal history), employees are also subject to an internal investigation, which includes an evaluation not limited to discipline records and performance assessments.
