Engineering Director, Woodbury, MN (pop. 69,426). Woodbury, incorporated in 1967, is one of the fastest growing cities in Minnesota, and the 9th largest city in the state. Over the past three decades the population has tripled, and is expected to exceed 85,000 by 2040. Woodbury’s long-serving Engineering and Public Works Director is retiring in summer 2018. As a result, and coupled with the growth and development of the City and its infrastructure, the engineering and public works functions are being divided into two departments. Each new department head will report to the City Administrator.
The Engineering Department will include the Engineering, Environmental and Municipal Buildings Divisions. The Director’s responsibilities are wide ranging, and include the coordination of public improvement projects, the review of private development proposals, and technical engineering design work; oversight of the environmental interests of the community and the organization’s facilities are also key duties.
Woodbury is a full-service city. In addition to Engineering, services also include Public Safety (Police, Fire, EMS), Public Works, Community Development, Parks and Recreation, Information & Communications Technology, Finance and Administration (HR, legal, clerk). The Engineering Director is responsible for leading a department of 16 full-time and part-time employees, as well as managing approximately $3 million in operating and utility budgets, plus more than $150 million in capital improvement programming.
Qualified candidates should have:
A Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, public administration, business administration or related field; registration as a PE is highly desired;
Eight or more years of increasingly responsible experience in the management of a public works or engineering department, or similar client-based organization, is desirable;
Three years of supervisory experience;
A collaborative and communicative approach to work;
Comfort working with an array of stakeholders including elected officials, residents and intergovernmental contacts;
Passion for a fast-paced, demanding and rewarding environment; and
Experience working for a developing community is ideal.
