The Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CE/ENVE) and Construction Management (CM) at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, invite applications for the Director of the Cross-Disciplinary Studies Minor in Heavy Civil Engineering Construction.
Start date of September 8, 2021.
This is a full-time, annually renewable, non-tenure-track faculty position. We seek applicants who emphasize teaching first, who are grounded in field experience, and have knowledge of heavy civil project planning; preconstruction; estimating; construction methods; temporary structures; heavy equipment operations and management.
The ideal candidate is expected to contribute expertise in the workflow of heavy civil construction; constructability; safety; equipment fleet configuration; productivity optimization; and will have experiences that significantly contribute to a joint interdisciplinary heavy civil minor between the departments of CE/ENVE and CM. This newly endowed position benefits from the committed support of the heavy civil industry.
Candidates should have a strong interest in and are expected to:
Teach undergraduate classes and labs in heavy civil engineering and management as well as develop and teach new undergraduate courses in this area of specialization.
Advise students as appropriate on Department, college, and university policy and career opportunities.
Work with and mentor student organizations and competition teams.
Collaborate with related disciplines, industry partners, and community.
Collaborate with faculty in CE and CM on developing new courses and professional interests

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must possess a minimum of a master’s degree with a B.S. and/or M.S. in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or closely related degree(s). Candidates must have a minimum of 5 years relevant professional experience in the heavy/civil construction industry.
Candidates must have a commitment to furthering inclusion and diversity, and the ability to communicate effectively, work cooperatively with students, faculty, staff, and administrators from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds, conduct themselves professionally, and perform appropriate service functions at the Department, college, and university level.
Candidates must have demonstrated experience and commitment to student-centered learning and teaching, as well as the ability to collaboratively work in multidisciplinary settings is required.
Candidates must have demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language is required.
PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS
Professional certifications or licenses related to the construction/civil engineering industry.
Relevant teaching experience in higher education.
Prior experience advising/mentoring/coaching undergraduate construction management and/or civil engineering students, developing undergraduate curricula, and participating in regional/national seminars, student competitions, workshops, and committees.
Preference will be given to those with experience in working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive, and inclusive environment.
Preference will also be given to those with relevant work experience and those who bring professional capabilities.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENTS
The Construction Management Department offers an ACCE-accredited, 4-year Bachelor of Science degree program that currently enrolls over 550 students. The Department maintains close ties with industry and prides itself on the practical application of construction knowledge and active engagement of industry partners in its educational mission.
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has two separate B.S. degree programs with approximately 750 undergraduate students in the Civil Engineering Program and 200 in the Environmental Engineering Program. Both programs are ABET accredited. The Department also offers an M.S. degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering with approximately 50 active graduate students.
