The City of Worthington is seeking candidates for the position of Director of Engineer and Public Works. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual pursuing the rewarding challenges presented in directing the engineering technical services and public works of a growing and thriving mid-sized city of 13,500. Worthington is southwest Minnesota’s commercial, industrial and agricultural regional center.
The Engineering Department of six employees includes an Assistant Engineer, two engineering technicians, a GIS/CAD technician, an assessment accountant and an administrative secretary with an administrative budget of $400,000. The Public Works Department of twelve includes the Public Works Superintendent, Street and Parks Superintendents and nine operators with a budget of $7.4 million. Worthington’s infrastructure includes:
• 82 miles of streets,
• 81 miles of water mains,
• 56 miles of sanitary sewers,
• 53 miles of storm sewer,
• a 4.0 million (maximum) gallon per day waste water treatment facility,
• an airport with 5,500 foot and 4,200 crosswind runways, and
• 26 parks
JBS has a swine processing facility in Worthington employing more than 2,000 l...ocally. JBS is the world leader in providing meat protein including beef, pork, poultry and lamb. The Worthington facility processes 20,000 hogs a day and is currently constructing an 180,000 square foot addition.
Worthington is home to beautiful Lake Okabena, a 750-acre recreation and fishing gem. Ten parks dot its shores with public access for boating, swimming, fishing, concerts and playgrounds. Biking and walking trails encircle the lake.
Worthington Public Schools has a K-12 enrollment of 3,185. Facilities include K-4 Prairie Elementary, 5-8 Worthington Middle School, 9-12 Worthington High School, and the Area Learning Center. An intermediate grade school is currently under construction that will be home to grades 3-5 in the near future. Private grade schools include Worthington Christian (K-8) and St. Mary’s (K-6). Worthington is also home to Minnesota West Community and Technical College, a member of the Minnesota State College and University system.
Worthington has two primary health care clinics; one owned and operated by the Sanford Health System and the other by the Avera Health System. We are also home to Worthington Sanford Health Hospital, a secondary care facility, and the Sanford Health Cancer Center.
A local option sales tax was initiated in January with Legislative authority to collect up to $25 million over the next 15 years. The revenue will be used to fund quality of life amenities. Projects currently underway include facility improvements in a number of parks, construction of an indoor turf field house, and expansion of the City’s outdoor aquatic center. Future projects include improvements to the ice arena, lake water quality improvements and expansion of Ehlers Park.
Like many communities throughout Minnesota, Worthington has a housing shortage. The City has stepped forward and is currently developing a 50-acre subdivision that will accommodate approximately 98 single-family move-up and executive lots. Engineering work on a second subdivision is underway that will have 18 starter home lots. Renovation of the Historic Thompson Hotel building continues that will house 40 workforce apartments and the City recently signed a development agreement for the construction of a 40-unit upscale market rate apartment building on land currently owned by the City.
The City recently completed construction of a five-screen state of the art stadium seating movie theater. A movie theater was the most requested amenity brought forward by our residents during our State of the City listening sessions conducted two years ago. Unfortunately, the pandemic has delayed its opening due to the delay in the release of new films by the major studios. The opening is planned for the spring of 2021.
Worthington is rich in culture as one of the most diverse cities in Minnesota. A stroll down our main street presents offerings of Latino, Asian and African fares. Home to more than 30 languages, Worthington offers a truly international experience generally found in only the largest of urban settings.
If this opportunity presents the professional and personal challenges you are seeking, please complete our application packet or feel free to direct any questions to City Administrator Steve Robinson, 507-360-9715.
