 Position: Research Physical Scientist 
 Salary Range: $82,540 to 150,777 per year 
 The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Subtropical Horticulture Research Station, Miami, Florida, invites applications for a Research Physical Scientist position. 
 The incumbent will be expected to: 1) develop, evaluate, and apply next generation technologies to improve detection and monitoring of adult fruit fly populations in the field by using automated systems not requiring regular human intervention to count and identify trap captures; 2) improve post-harvest detection of fruit fly larval infestation within host fruit by using non-destructive imaging and/or chemical sampling techniques; 3) use knowledge and expertise toward development of novel detection approaches for other agricultural pests that threaten to invade or have established in South Florida; 4) evaluate applications of robotics, unmanned aerial drones, and nanotechnology as warranted for improving pest detection networks; 5) Maintain laboratory colonies of test insects. 
 This position requires a degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. Experience is required conducting research on trapping and detection systems for invasive insect pests; maintaining laboratory colonies of test insects; and planning and conducting independent research and reporting results in peer-reviewed journals.

 Primary Responsibilities 
 
 Partner with sales and marketing to develop actionable problem statements based both on trends in the market and on latent customer needs 
 Lead in the development of new materials and processes which will enable Michelman to develop novel application-centric solutions for P&#38;P customers 
 Design new (and sometimes complex) product development experiments to be conducted at the lab scale &#8211; either by you or by others 
 Build significant expertise in coatings application methods and performance tests which will enable the development of new product concepts 
 Partner with global engineering/manufacturing teams to ensure efficient and effective scale-up of product prototypes of interest to the business/market 
 Establish relationships with suppliers, customers/prospects, and industry organizations which allow for sharing Michelman insights to strengthen technical/market leadership positions 
 Represent Michelman technologies and solutions at key conferences, as needed 
 
 
 Develop new product prototypes by iteratively preparing lab scale batches for evaluation and then testing them against market-relevant success criteria/controls 
 Develop a basic understanding of chemistries, technologies, and applications of importance to other Michelman business groups to identify potential product translations 
 Develop a basic understanding of the regulatory environment as it impacts Michelman raw materials and products and communicate those requirements both internally and externally 
 Document thoroughly and accurately all experiments, analyses, and testing results 
 
 
 Ensure timely delivery of project-related information/results to company partners 
 Plan, initiate, and execute projects using the Michelman project management process 
 Provide reports (written and verbal) on technical results/conclusions to business and technology leadership

 Excellent analytical and observation skills 
 Extensive experience developing waterborne products, additives, and/or formulations for various applications including corrugation, paper plates, molded fiber, biobased / biodegradable coatings, compostable or recyclable solutions for paper converting and flexible packaging, and other applications in Circular Economy plus demonstrating their value in downstream end-uses 
 Demonstrated track record of innovation, technology scouting, and/or process/product prototyping is highly desirable 
 Deep understanding of the range of substrates to be coated in P&#38;P applications and the methods used to apply coatings to them 
 Experience having led projects within a stage-gate project management framework &#8211; including the development of project charters and subsequent reports required for communicating with key stakeholders 
 Agility/flexibility to adapt to changing business priorities and to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously 
 Ability to develop/assess new-to-the-organization materials/processes as needed to address technical challenges and train others (as needed) in their effective use 
 Understanding of the steps required in order to effectively transition laboratory materials/processes to a manufacturing environment

 Education and Experience 
 
 Bachelor&#8217;s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer/Materials Science, or related field and at least ten (10) years of relevant experience. Advanced degree preferred. 
 Minimum of five years of industrial experience with a proven track record of developing waterborne products, additives, and/or formulations for various applications including corrugation, paper plates, molded fiber, biobased / biodegradable coatings, compostable or recyclable solutions for paper converting and flexible packaging, and other applications in Circular Economy. 
 
 Other 
 
 Able to travel by car or plane to visit customers when needed 
 Role may on occasion require long periods of standing and/or an extended work schedule 
 Role may require heavy lifting from time to time (as much as 50 lbs. to waist level) 
 Role will demand appropriate use of PPE - including safety shoes
