 Job Description

The Bridges and Structures Bureau is seeking to hire an experienced civil/hydraulic engineer to lead our Preliminary Design Unit in an office which prepares approximately 200 design plans annually with an estimated construction cost over $150 million. &#xa0; &#xa0; This position requires an individual capable of leading 6 engineers and 2 technicians in the development of preliminary structure designs for the highway program. &#xa0;Experience with applying advanced hydraulic and engineering design principles of a broad scope and complexity is necessary. &#xa0;This position requires an engineer licensed to practice civil engineering in the State of Iowa. &#xa0; Typical Responsibilities: 
 
 Manage, supervise, and direct the technical phase of preliminary plan production in the Preliminary Unit of the Bridges and Structures Bureau. &#xa0;This includes performing hydrologic and hydraulic design of various types of complex highway structures.&#xa0; 
 Manage the administrative phase of the preliminary design unit in planning, organizing, coordinating, and scheduling of assigned work on the primary and interstate road system so that the goals of the production schedule are met. 
 Administer the personnel of the Preliminary Design Unit to assure that all personnel matters are effectively handled. 
 Review the implement improvements to current hydraulic and drainage policy and procedures. Implement changes to hydraulic and drainage design procedure based on new research, design methodologies, and feedback from construction and maintenance personnel. 
 Provide support to the Construction Bureau and Iowa Transportation Districts for timely solutions to construction and maintenance problems involving hydraulic and drainage issues. 
 Supervise the review of plans that are submitted by outside agencies for approval.
