Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Intelligent Civil Infrastructure
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at The George Washington University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor starting as early as Fall 2020. The successful candidate is expected to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, to establish and maintain a strong, externally funded research program, and to actively engage and contribute to internal and external professional service.
We seek applicants with strong research experience and interest in the design, development, and management of intelligent civil infrastructure. Applicants must have an earned Ph.D. in engineering or closely related field, and demonstrated expertise in one of the areas related to the design, construction, and management of intelligent civil infrastructure, including but not limited to smart materials and structures, structural health monitoring using advanced sensing technologies, uncertainty quantification and risk analysis for modeling hazards and their effects on infrastructure, and design, modeling and simulation of intelligent urban transportation systems. Doctoral candidates will be considered, but must complete all the requirements for the doctorate degree by the date of appointment.
It is expected that the successful candidate will take advantage of the expertise and facilities available across the School and the University in materials science and engineering, wireless sensing, robotics, MEMS, computer vision, large data management (high performance computing and date sciences), systems engineering, and public policy to develop novel methods for design, construction, operation, and management of intelligent, resilient, and sustainable civil infrastructure. The experimental and computational facilities available in the School (e.g., the high bay structural lab, center for intelligent system research, geotechnical engineering lab, structures and earthquake engineering lab) provide a unique opportunity for cross-disciplinary research initiatives.
There is also a strong potential for the new faculty to receive a secondary or joint appointment with another Department in the School or University. Hence, applicants with educational and research background in more than one area are invited to apply.

CEE Department maintains state-of-the-art laboratories in the fields of structural, environmental, and geotechnical engineering at the Science and Engineering Hall.
The CEE Department fosters a vibrant, multi-cultural, technological community of faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students and has close ties with numerous government and industry research labs and institutes. In addition to a Bachelor of Science program in civil and environmental engineering, the Department offers graduate programs in environmental, geotechnical, structural, transportation, and water resources engineering as well as materials and mechanics leading to MSc and PhD degrees. The CEE department also offers a five-year Bachelor/Master program in civil and environmental engineering. In the past 10 years, the School of Engineering and Applied Science and the CEE Department have seen a large increase in percentage of women in the undergraduate programs. Currently more than 50% of CEE undergraduates are women.
The CEE Department has several affiliated SEAS centers and institutes, in addition to its own laboratories, both at the main campus and the GW’s Virginia Science and Technology Campus (VSTC) in Ashburn, Virginia. Among these are the Earthquake Engineering and Structures Laboratory (including a six DOF shake table), Large Scale Structural Testing Laboratory (High Bay Facility: https://highbay.seas.gwu.edu/), Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering Laboratory, and Center for Intelligent System Research, all of which have had extended sponsorship from government and industry, and benefitted from strong partnerships and collaborations with the cognizant governmental labs.
