| The City of Ames Electric Services Department has an exciting opportunity for a Power Plant Engineer to provide engineering support to the City's power generating facilities. The Power Plant Engineer performs engineering services relating to inspection, improvement, efficient operation, maintenance, construction, environmental assessment and compliance, and management of the power generation facilities of the municipal electric utility; performs related work and other duties and tasks as assigned. Examples of Essential Job Functions Examples of Essential Job Functions: Provides engineering support to the City's power generating facilities and associated plant equipment and systems to ensure operation of the facilities are proper, safe, efficient and environmentally responsible; develops and writes specifications for power plant projects and assists Purchasing in the issuance of request-for-proposals (RFPs) and bid documents; evaluates proposals and bids and provides analyses and recommendations to City staff, management, and Council; supervises alterations of plant and equipment; reviews plans, drawings, and specifications submitted by engineering consultants; conducts efficiency tests of the electric generating plant and on associated equipment; performs analyses, prepares reports and makes recommendations to improve plant costs, equipment efficiency, and safety of plant operations; inspects and performs tests on power plant equipment to assess condition, identify problems and potential for malfunction, and to design and implement plant and equipment improvements; oversees and coordinates work performed by contractors; may be assigned to supervise other employees; monitors industry trends and acquires knowledge of new methods and equipment which pertain to electric plant production, operations and maintenance. Provides assistance and support to the plant to insure environmental compliance; analyzes, recommends and implements cost-effective environmental control strategies and technologies; compiles plant information and data and prepares forms and reports as necessary to meet state and federal reporting requirements. May be required to develop load and generation forecasts and perform related analyses, along with entering schedules into the MISO power market. Gives tours of the power generating facilities to students, community groups, and contractors.
